I replace mine about once a year because pillows can harbor bacteria and dust mites. You can launder them, depending on the filling, with decent results every month or so.

I heard on a nightly news program that "they" are now suggesting that people replace them on a yearly basis. I think this must be some kind of a media & marketing ploy to get the public to spend more money than they need to & to needlessly throw away perfectly good pillows. I can understand a 5 year plan, but not a yearly one!

I wash my pillows in the washing machine and dry them in the dryer. That way you get rid of mold and bacteria. Sometimes when I don't wash them, I put them in the dryer on fluff with a dryer sheet to get the dust out. I keep my pillows until they get lumpy. I have 2 pillows I purchased from Eddie Bauer that are fiberfill tha I have had probably 10 years and they are like new.

The general rule of thumb I was taught was that if you fold it in half and it doesn't immediately spring back to shape, it's probably too old.
