In terms of "ever", I can't answer the question.
In terms of "today", I still have to disagree with Derek Jeter being the "most" overrated baseball player, but it's sad that a player with so much promise had to begin his "legacy" with assistance of a preteen (12-year old Jeffrey Maier, and if Jeter hasn't been calling Maier every day thanking him for that interference, he's an ungrateful SOB).
Pick a player the Cubs signed between the 2006 World Series and the 2007 preseason, and you'll find a player more overrated than Jeter. Pick a pitcher signed in that same timeframe, and you'll find a player more overrated than Jeter. Out of those two lists, you'll find the most overrated player in today's game, but the name I'm choosing is Alfonso Soriano, even though I'm not the first to name him.

Jeter is by far the most overrated. Sure his batting stats are good, but not great! His defense sucks he has no business playing shortstop with A-rod at third! Jeter does have some good accomplishments in his career but he is not the player Yankee fans believe he is! All-star yes. One of the greats not even close.

A debatable question. I think Jeter is a great baseball player, yet his age is starting to show. Dallas McPherson of the California Angels. A so-called top rated prospect has not materialized since his promotion to the big leagues in 2004. The Halos let Troy Glaus sign with the Phoenix team for a player that strikes out too much.

This question has really just been ANOTHER excuse to either praise or bash Jeter.
This is an extremely difficult question to answer properly. Perhaps one way to address it is by looking at players in the Hall of Fame who clearly have no business being there - unless it's on vacation with their family. Using that criteria some worthy candidates for most overrated player would be:
Dave Bancroft - played 2/3 of his career after the dead ball era and registered a .279 batting average with barely 2,000 hits. No power, no run production.
Johnny Evers - He was a good player, probably his day's equivalent of Ray Durham. He's in because of the Tinker-Evers-to-Chance poem.
Rick Ferrell - Catcher from the big hitting era of the 1930's. Compared to his contemporaries, his stats were nothing special.
Jesse Haines - Pitcher for the Cardinals in the 30's. Electing him is akin to putting Jerry Koosman in the Hall. Good pitcher, nothing special.
Phil Rizzuto - Yankee fans will crucify this choice but the fact is he only played 13 years (10 is the minimum), had a mere 1,588 hits. Okay, he had no power, but that means he should contribute something else, right? Like runs scored? Well, he only scored 878 runs (average of about 68 a year). He had one great season and a few more above average ones. Yeah, he could field, but he's in simply because of pressure politics. Sorry, Scooter.
Ray Schalk - Slightly above average catcher from the early 20th century. Seems to me he's in because he was one of the White Sox who didn't throw the 1919 series.
Joe Tinker - see Johnny Evers up there ^
That's just a sampling and, above all, one person's opinion. :-)

"romulus" I know most Yankee fans are delusional but where the heck do you come up with Jeter have a career post season BA of .384 >it's .314< quite a difference there don't you think.
I don't know why anyone would call Jeter overrated. Yes he won the gold glove last year, he also ranked LAST defensively among the 10 AL shortstops who played enough to be considered full time. gold gloves are a popularity contest and rarely go to the player who was actually the best defensive player at his position
If the gold glove was done strictly by the numbers like BA, RBI, HR , Jeter would come as close to winning a gold glove as Mario Mendoza came to winning a batting title

I think right now that Joe Mauer the Catcher for the Minnesota Twins is way over rated. He hits for high average but there is no pop in his bat, not to mention there are so many better players on his own team. The Best Pitcher in Baseball (Santana) last years A.L. MVP (Morneau). So for the moment I would have to Say Joe Mauer. Also what ever happened to those 100 Base Stealers? Vince Coleman and Ricky Henderson, you just don't see anyone putting up those kind of steals anymore.
Finally a better year for the Cubs!

Chris Sabo - when he came up, everyone proclaimed him the next Pete Rose.
In no way, shape or form is Jeter overrated, and I'm not a Yankee fan in the least. He's a solid, if not spectacular player, who's consistency and effort should be emulated by every player in the league.

Derek Jeter is a winner. Nuff said there.
Gary Matthews Jr. now is overrated. Cut 5 times, had one good season and now the Angels act like they got Willie Mays.

I think ur totally wrong. I actually don't think, I know ur wrong. Anybody who says Derek Jeter is jealous because he's the best and has the looks 2 get the girls.
Since U said "Ever" I'll have 2 say Somebody from like the 1800s or early 1900s or 1910s, like Honus Wagner, or Walter Johnson. Nobody really knows about those stats. 4 all we know, Walter Johnson could've been a horrible pitcher.
Since U said "ever", the Yankees have a bigger gap between WS than people have won. Yanks 26, next 10. Gap: 16.
Next time u ask a question, make sure u get ur facts straight, until then, suck a d!ck.
