Which Royal Family? There are loads all over the world. However, if you are talking about the British Royal Family, the last member to be killed was in WWI at the front. Although there was Prince George Duke of Kent who was flying to meet one of Hitlers Henchmen Rudolf Hess but crashed in Scotland on his way to the meetingsupposedly with the Americans in Iceland

Prince Harry will be at the front of the Iraq war as was his uncle Prince Andrew when he flew helicopters during the Falklands War in 1982. And Prince Philip served on the convoys during WW2

Go back in history and you will find that 'Royalty' often led from the front. Recent history----Prince Andrew operated as Helicopter Pilot in Falklands War (decoy for incoming missiles), and I believe Prince Harry (Dianna's son) is adamant that he goes to Iraq with his unit. His philosophy being that he cannot be expected to NOT go when he has trained alongside his men. Respect the man.

Richard III died in battle in 1485. He wasn't deployed miles from the action. In fact he had his personal badge painted on his helmet, so that everyone knew who he was.

As we say in Texas,"If you want to be the Big Dog,then you go in front". If a warrior was to become the monarch by his own hand, then he led his own troops by being in front of them regardless of the enemy shooting arrows or footsoldiers trying to hack you to death with a sword.Look at Lord Mountbatten(Duke of Edinburgh's brother)f soldier who was on the battlefield during WWII,but he was a brilliant strategist.
He was killed by a bomb planted by the IRA in 1969.

I don't they go into a real war unless there family want them bumped off for some reason or other. And if they do happened to go to a real war they wont be in any danger.
They will be very well protected, and come with lots and lots of medals.
