It's a cult classic but best watched with a crowd, in a theatre rather than at home because the actual movie is pretty bad. It's a musical with Susan Sarandon, Meat Loaf, etc. in their early days. In the theaters, people dressed as characters and had various props to make it participatory...which creates the vibe. There's a couple of dances that people also do.

It's typically shown at midnight in most places.

Wikipedia gives a lot of info.

It is a total cult classic. In San Francisco they used to put on a live version of it at a theatre there, and they would show the movie on a big screen with the volume off, while they had real-life stage actirs repeating the same scenes on stage following along with the movie. My sister knew a bunch of people in it, and had friends that would go every Friday night. When I turned 16, she made me dress all goth and go with her and her friends. It was so fun. Interestingly enough I was pretty uncomfortable, because she made me sit in the front row and when the lead actor(who was a real transvestite by the way) was signing "I'm Just a Sweet Transvestite" he made his way off the stage and into the crowd, basically giving me a lap dance for the entire scene. I was so embarrassed, but at the same time I will never forget that experience for as long as I live. My sister was soon hired as a woman pat-down security guard, because she got to know everyone pretty well. I don't know how she feels about that time of her life now, but I know it was pretty memorable! You should rent it, but if you ever get the chance to see it live, you should.

its a lot of fun if you can go to the movie theater and see it, the audience participation is fun, if not rent it.. its a spoof on old horror movies, like Frankenstein, and outer space alien B movies from the 50s.. Tim Curry is a transvestite from another planet, its a musical, so it has great songs in it as well.
it has kind of an adult theme with lead character making a man to have, but based on what is out there today, its pretty tame and fun..

a classic. very bizzare and meant to be that way. some theaters still have midnight showings. if you can handle it, you should go to one. the freakiest thing you ever saw but lots of fun. some people are really into it. if you can't find a showing in your area, rent it. it has to be seen to be believed.

That is one movie that can't be explained and have the explanation do the movie justice. Go to your local movie rental store and rent it, watch it and know!

lol geez, you are right. hard to explain that one. you have to experience it. just remember when you are watching it, when it was in theatres in the 70's, everyone in the audience dressed like and acted like characters in the movie. god what a trip down memory lane.
