To be African American one would have to be an American of African descent. Charlize Theron is Caucasian and from South Africa. She is definitely not African American.

The people I know living in America, who were born and raised in Africa don't generally call themselves African-American. rather they would say Ethiopian, Kenyan, South African, etc.
This is one of the reasons SOME (certainly not all) African Americans prefer the term black. "African American" generalizes very distinct cultural identities into one grouping and ignores certain parts of hertitage if one is also strongly identified towards a Caribbean or other part of their history.
However, there are as many arguments against using the term black by those who prefer African American.

Technically yes, but no she isn't. African-American is the term used to describe black people born in the United States, with African ancestry. Since Charlize is white and born in Africa, I think the proper term would be American citizen or South African living in America.
This is from Wikipedia:
In the United States the term is generally used for those of Sub-Saharan African ancestry, and not, for example, to European colonial or Arab/Berber African ancestry, such as Moroccans or White South African-European ancestry.

Just because she was born in Africa doesn't make her African American. The location where your born doesn't determined your ethnicity. Her ethnicity is what her parents are. I can be born in Italy, does that that make me Italian? Even though both my parents are black? Think about it.
