I read one of the posts by a lady on this site who was offended that someone used the term "blacks" rather than "African Americans". I work with a lady who is offended if you use the term "African Americans" and she prefers the term "blacks". Is there really no consensus on this? Which one is more acceptable? (on a side note: Dave Matthews of the Dave Matthews band was born and raised in South Africa, but has lived in the US since he was a teenager. Is he African American?)

There is no consensus on anything if you pay attention.

There is no such thing as one general group of people coming to a unanimous consensus on something. It just doesnt exist.

I'm caucasion. So maybe not your best advocate but I also feel African American is not fitting. Another name should be used to describe them. I don't mind being called white, but it is not a term I'd expect to see on a form asking which race I am, whereas I've seen the term black on one.

African American is the right term all politicions use it and the news as for Dave Matthews i wouldn't know if your were born there it doesn't make you that it goes by your nationality

No matter what anyone does, someone will be offended. It's the culture we live in. I personally feel that they should just get over it.

And yes, if he was born in africa, and now he's american, he's african-american.

I am white and I prefer calling others who are white, whites. I do the same for black people. I accept them either way. I just think the names Caucasian, American, and African sound kind of corny. Now the Chinese and Japanese got good names.
