It is recommended that when trying to conceive one should take 400 mcg of folic acid. Then increase this to 600 mcg once pregnancy is confirmed. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is recommend that you not exceed 1000 mcg (or 1mg) of synthetic folic acid a day. Although, on the March of Dimes website, if you have had a previous pregnancy affected by a birth defect then you should take 4000 mcg (or 4 mg) a day.

I'm not sure if you can overdose on folic acid, I do know they recommend 4 mg a day.

It is also recommended that ALL women of childbearing age should be taking folic acid daily, even if not trying to become pregnant. Most of the problems associated with folic acid deficiency occur in the earliest weeks of pregnancy, often before you even know.

Good Luck!
