I've tried everything from formatting the hard disk and reinstalling everything but I cannot get the USB ports to work. When I input a device, the power source comes on but on the screen there is no response to recognise the input. The same devices work perfectly in other PCs so I know they are ok. Checked Deivce Manager and there is no problem there either so what is causing this and is there a solution to resolve this? Any help/advice will be greatly appreciated, thanks!

If it seems that the devices are drawing power from the USB ports but not being recognised, it may be that the devices are taking too much power from the USB ports. This is most likely from things like Webcams, external Hard Drives, and USB Modems. You may like to try getting a powered USB hub.

Worst case senario is what I am assuming in this post. I was using Windows 2000 with the NTFS file system.

Sounds like you have a bad port-to-motherboard connection. Forget using those ports they are effectively dead. This is an early warning sign of motherboard failure I say you can get 8-10 more months if you luck out but in the mean time I would go shopping for a new system sorry but it is cheaper to buy new than fix the old one when it comes to the problem you are having.
The problem you have is failing motherboard solder points that connect the port in this case the intergrated usb card to the motherbourd has failed.

bypass into gadget supervisor (start up > administration panel > device > hardware tab > click on gadget supervisor) then click the plus sign in the USB area. appropriate click on all the USB products listed then click uninstall until eventually all of them are long gone. final appropriate click on the different merchandise and then click "test for hardware adjustments". which will reinstall them, if that doesn't paintings then possibility is that particular USB port is undesirable.

I am going to assume that your computer is Windows98 and the other computers are probably WindowsXP. You need to have drivers for 98 for the USB to work (USB2 ports or not they will not work on 98 without drivers). If you know the manufacture of the flash drive, go there and download the drivers, install them and it should work.

If you have a blue tooth dongle installed, remove it and uninstall the driver. You'll find everything else works fine then.

sounds like you just need to update the USB drivers for your laptop. try going to the laptop manufacturers website and search for updated USB drivers.

please tell me you're not running Windows NT... If you are, nothing you can ever do will make those ports work. NT doesn't know what they are.
