Death or guilt or both, depending on who you ask.
Speaking of asking, why have you ASKED this three times in the past five minutes?

Despair, mostly.
It doesn't really "mean" anything in the conventional sense. It just helps with the mood.
Poe has written an essay explaining how he worked and how he came up with the Raven. He wanted to write something sad and gloomy. The Raven was perfect because it was a harbinger of doom, being a dark bird. Plus, the sound was very important to Poe poetry, so just the words "The Raven" had that particular foreboding resonance Poe was looking for. The name "Lenore" was chosen for the same reason.(Also note the similarity in sounds used for both words).

I read this twice. The way you layer longer story-related prose is admirable, and something I have much trouble with. You make it seem effortless, natural, but all of us who write know the opposite is true. I often measure the effectiveness of a piece by the number of TD's........Jealousy rears it's green head. Kudos to you, Mr Carney.

It's the central image of the poem. It could signify death, guilt, or internal conflict.
