1080 is the ammount of horizontal lines of resolution (like with a computer...1080 is the number of pixels going up the screen) the i and p stand for interlaced and progressive...progressive is better than interlaced as it creates the image on the screen in one sweep whereas interlaced does it in 2 by doing all the odd lines on the first pass and then the even ones on the second...the reason progressive is better than interlaced is bacause first of all you get the full 60 (or 50 depending on whether you use NTSC or PAL) frames per second and with interlaced you only get half that as it is using 2 sweeps to create the image) also with interlaced on larger screens there tends to be a slight blurr to the image so progressive is clearer

1080 means there are that many horizontal lines of resolution on the screen.
the I means interlaced which is that when the screen refreshes only every other line gets refreshed and on the next pass through the ones that got skipped before get refreshed it does this to cut back on the amount of information needed to run but the refresh rates are so quick you don't notice.

the p refers to progressive scan which means when the screen refreshes all lines are refreshed each pass through.

it looks so good because 1080 is more lines of resolution than standard tv.

1080p and i mean Progressive-Scan and Interlaced-Video. They give crisper, cleaner images than just standard video.
