It seems to me that Capitalism isn't gonna work as we get farther into the future. i believe for a stable society Socialism must rise to the front as the Economic standard. I feel in the future all basic human needs must be provided free of charge ie food, water, shelter, heat, healthcare and higher education.

You would need millions of people, preferably people who would be willing to die. You would actually need a full out coup. I've thought it through. You would need a few million people to meet in Washington D.C. Then you would need to capture the Capitol building and the White House and if possible the President and as much of the Congress as possible. Then you would need to tell the generals of the military that you need them to ensure protection from terrorists and other nations, you know speak thier language to them.

Then you would need to appeal to the population of not only the US but the world. Maybe by pulling US troops unconditionally out of Iraq. Something major as an olive branch while still letting them know that nukes are online because while we don't like violence we will defend ourselves if need be. Then you do great things like reach out to terrorists and ask what we could do to help them so they don't need to fight us anymore. Same with Iran and North Korea.

I would institute a policy of if you work and at what you are good at and help society everything you need will be provided free of charge ie electricity, water, heat, a home, food, clothing, education on all levels. Then something of a reward tier system for luxuries like TV's and cars. If your a Doctor or a scientist you get top tier action a bigger house, Cadillacs and HD. If your a fast food worker, well you det an apartment, Dodge and a 27' Phillips.

Drugs would be legal and I'm talking most drugs, not how you would think though. Weed you could get in stores or whatever. Cocaine, meth, and heroin would be different. We'd build "clinics" where users of these drugs could smoke and shoot up their lives away, while keeping them high and away from society we effectivly wipe out 60% of crime.

All this of course would destroy the world economy but we're counting on this. We then extend an open invitation to all countries to voluntarily join our new system. Where everyone is taken care of and the only worry is what we need to build next.

Countries we would need to actively recruit would be Japan (tech), China(manpower), North Africa(land), and of course the other major powers. If even a couple get on board then the rest will topple like dominoes because they wouldn't really have a choice. The only country that is really sellf sustained is China but they have a huge over population problem. Then you divide the world into specific sectors. The middle East would be the industrial center, that's where the oil is and polluting the desert doesn't sound as bad as polluting the amazon. The US and Japan would be tech research and learning centers. North Africa could be extensivly irrigated to create a vast farmland capable of feeding the world. Australia could be a continental wildlife refuge. We would leave most of South America alone. We need the amazon. We could make Isreal the cultural and religous center since that's what it is. You get the idea.

Socialism will only be the economic standard if one removes the brain of every individual in the world.

First off I am a 'lefty'.
But tell me how giving every thing people need to survive is going to work. Free-riders will ruin the system. And if everything required for a marginal life style is provided, there will be one HECK of a lot more free riders.

Even if other people didn't have to pay for this existence (i.e. some technological 'utopia'), you would take away from those you give - a sense of worth - which is way too valuable to lose. I, for one, get much more than a paycheque from my work. It allows me to contribute to the society I live in... that is worth a lot.

Unless you can find a way to give all these things without these problems I cannot see how it would work. A mixed economy is the one that seems to work best now; the level of government intrusion... the balance, is something each society has to maximize through their own values. I think socialist ideals of social safety nets will increase in the next 50 years. But capitalism is here to stay: and that is also a good thing.

Peace

I lean politcally to the left also, but I feel that socialism does not work. If you look at Europe as an example there economy has basically flat lined over the past 10 years. Second ther post secondary education and healthcare have become worse over time, just think that if you need to get a simple angioplasty you may have to wait several weeks maybe even months to have it done, comapred to here where you can get it done on demand. I agree that our system is not perfect there are definatly flaws, but the opportunity to advance in social class has been better here than in Europe. Finally the US Gini index which measures income equality has been much better than our European counterparts go figure. We need to fix some of our policies but I feel socialism is not the answer

It never ceases to amaze me that people who love Socialism MUST use the innovations of Capitalism (computer technology and the Internet) in order to spread the message of Socialism.
Here is the difference between Capitalism and Socialism.

Who says it doesn't work?

Since the government is providing things for free, can I get a Lexus? I've always wanted one and since it is free - why not?

What is sad is that you choose massive government control over liberty. I will start practicing to be the government's loyal servant. I might as well, since that is where we are all heading.

It will never be free of charge. Even where it is allegedly free, it is paid for. The difference is how it's paid for. In some countries you just fork over a large portion of your earnings to the State, which then provides the services in the best tradition of government (that is, badly). At least in capitalistic countries you get to own more of what you earn and choose between private service providers, choosing (if you prefer) low price over high quality. Freedom of choice...that's a big freedom. A lot of us like it and get quite peeved if anyone suggests taking it away.
