Essentially every good school "recommends" that you have at least two SAT Subject tests. While you can technically submit an application without them, your chances of being admitted are then drastically reduced since pretty much everyone else applying there will follow the recommended guidelines and submit their test scores. If you're not willing to put in the extra effort to take those tests, a good college is probably not going to want you.
