Yep - I lied about my GCSE results - missed out jobs that i didn't stay at for long and how much I got paid - unless its a job that requires detailed security screening most employers will only contact your last employer and then only to check that you actually turned up and did what you were employed to do.

Heck no! I have three reasons why I never have and never would.
1. There is no need to. I've worked hard in my life and have always done the best that I can do. Even if you got fired from a job, that is part of life. You should be able to own up to it and explain what happened and what you learned from it. Lying just doesn't make any sense.
2. With computers comes better tracking abilities. It is MUCH easier to get caught these days than it was 10 years ago or more. Anyone who has ever applied for the bar knows that even the slightest error or falsehood in your CV is detectable in this day and age. A friend of mine simply skipped the fact that she worked at Tacobell for a summer 8 years ago, and someone asked her about it in an interview. She said she simply forgot, and it ultimately did not matter, but she would have looked a lot smarter had the Tacobell simply remained.
3. The consequences of lying on your CV are severe. You can lose a job in a heart beat, even if they find out after the fact. Dishonesty on your CV is an indicator of your character. If you lied on that, what else might you lie about? That is what an employer is going to think. It is even conceivable in this small world that the fact you lied on your CV once could get around to other potential employers. One lie can cost you more than one job!
So, in conclusion, lying on your CV is a waste of time. If it is a small lie, then it simply is not worth it. Small problems are a part of life and are easily explained away. If it is a big lie, they are likely going to find out. Even if you get away with it once or twice, that only means you'll be losing out that much more when you are further advanced in your career and finally do get busted. The road back is long and arduous.

No I'd be too scared of getting caught. I did have a friend who completely fabricated her A-Level results though. I don't think she ever caught.
