They want some sort of souvenir to remind them of you.

Either be flattered or don't loan out your pens. Or use duct tape to tape an embarrassing object to it so they'll be unlikely to want to keep it.

OK Amanda, Let me take stab at this rather interesting question !

I actually think it stems from the fact that we, humans, like to "hold" things in our hands.

Consider...
Infants: we let them hold out fingers, rattlers, binky's, etc. So, from their very beginning, we are putting something in their tightly clinched little hands.

Toddlers: When we stae=rt to walk, we have managed to coordinate their walking skills with holding skills by giving them toy they can :hang" on to and walk.

Pre-school/Kindergarten: Ahh...here is where things get serious ! We give the little darl'ns a pencil and teach how to hold it properly to write with, not stab with !

1st thru 12th grades: the writing instrument is now a mainstay in the EVERYDAY life of a child. penmanship, tests, research papers, and on and on.

SO, to answer your question, it just so darn natural for us to hold on to a writing instrument...we tend to act like that toddler way back there, and walk off with it.

OK. There you have it. Did this help any at all ? :)
