The shells at the sea shore come from actualy living creatures in the ocean. These crustaeous (or shell wearing) organisms grow their shells from minerals that are in the water (generally calcium). When the organism dies, the body is eaten or erodes away and that leaves the shells to be washed on shore from the tidal action of the ocean. Thus when you walk down the beach you can see all the beautiful dead things from the ocean laying everywhere.

On a side note, these shell are found in rocks, and rock records dating back million and millions of years ago. We call them fossils when we find a shell in a rock, and these fossils give us important information on the climate, area, and environment that the rock came from, and they let us create an idea of what the earth has looked like over time.

The animals in the shells die and the shells get washed up on the beach. Most of the shells on the beach will be empty but occasionally there will be a live mollusc in there or perhaps an hermit crab. The action of the waves will slowly break them up so you will rarely find a perfect shell.

The shells come from shellfish that live in the ocean (such as clams and oysters). When they die, their shells get washed up on the beach by wave activity.

Why, from the sea of course. The animal inside the shell had died, so its shell wash up ashore by the current or the tide.
