Condoms have been around since ancient Egypt, but were not sure of the exact purpose of those early models- religious ritual or sexual protection? The first documented usage of prophylactics didn't occur until the middle ages. The dawn of romantic love and chivalry also gave birth to widespread STDs. Early condoms were made of linens or other fabric and were designed to protect men from catching a disease. They were never intended to prevent pregnancy.

The first published account of condom use is from 1500AD. Gabrielle Fallopius described a sheath made of linen which he claimed protected against syphillis. It was only later that the protection of a condom against pregnancy was recognised
