It could be that too many programs are trying to start when windows loads try cutting back to only the essential programs.
Most don't need to be started when you start your computer

You probably just have too many processes running, or too many programs running at once. Type alt + ctrl + delete, and then click on processes on the top toolbar of the window that just opened. Choose the processes you don't need so that you can free up some memory (RAM). Consider purchasing a memory card to increase your system's performance and prevent your computer form taking a long time from turning on. This would cost about $40 for a 256mb memory card. You should got to tiger direct. They charge about $25 for labor if you don't know how to install it yourself. Oh yeah, try deleting a few more programs that take up a lot of virtual memory. And try running the disk defragmenter (click on start, then all programs, then accessories, then system tools, then disk defragmenter. Here you will also find the disk cleanup application. These two will help. Also, consider reformatting your computer (click on start, then my computer, right click the disk you want to format, and click format from the options that come up). Remember that before you do this, you have your system disk to reinstall afterwards. Good luck!

Have you tried Ccleaner? Run the ISsues tool, then the Cleaner. Thn click Tools - Startup and stop stuff like your office suite loading on Startup.
You could also try Security Task Manager. It'll tell you whats running and give it a threat rating. Its a 30 day trial but that should be long enough to figure out whats wrong.
Plus, is your anti virus set to scan on startup?

whenever you start computers afresh, it'd go through the stage called POST..Power On Self Test, this is to make sure all the hardwares are working, but if you're talking about the computer starting after you logon, then it's the items in your startup, i'd advise you find a startup accelerator.

One possible reason is that you have a lot of programs that run in the background. You may not even need some of them but they take time for each one to start and that adds time to your startup.
