ford escort gt 1991? You have a junk yard candidate.

Sound more like a head gasket. once tho engines get to hot I'll bet that head gaskets a goner. first check oil pan for signs of antifreeze but I'll bet it broke water jacket to combustion chamber. antifreeze drowning the spark plugs

If you can hear your car cranking, then your OK. Have you check your fuel pump and filter? Usually fuel filter can get plugged, try replacing the fuel filter which does not cost a whole lot, but becareful gasoline is flammable and don't get it on your bare hand (a skin cancer causing agent) or clothes which could catch on fire in a dryer after you wash it. It sounds like your fuel filter or line, because you can smell gasoline and your spark plug is sparking. It is probably plugged up which preventing gas to get to engine to start your engine. It has happen to me before on a 1978 Dodge Aspen.
