Try Zakynthos, Greece. The water is clean and pleasantly warm. It is very scenic, the weather is usually beautiful in summer, and the atmosphere is very lively. Everyone seems happy in Greece (at least the vacationers).
Check out the website below.
Here is a snippet from the second website:
"The Shipwreck is the most famous of Zakynthos beaches and one of the most famous photographs of Greece.
It is situated at the eastern part of the island. The beach took it name from the ship that, in 1983, transported illegally cigarettes and washed up on the beach that has, by the years, grown up around it. The ruins of the ship are on the middle of a beautiful white sandy beach with crystal waters. The beach is surrounded by vertical rock cliffs and that makes an impressive picture."
I wish "frog" had told us which beach he visited in St. Tropez. Sounds like a winner too!

Depends what you're looking for but the Atlantic coast of France is quite spactacular and the water is clean. There are huge stretches of unspoiled sandy beaches on the Bordeaux coast - one caveat is that simming can be dangerous due to rips and currents so if you want to swim stay within a patrolled area.
I would avoid the med including the adriatic. Essentially the med is one huge open sewer drained at the straits of Gibraltar. You don't swim in the Med, just go through the motions.

Barafundle Bay
Barafundle, Near Pembroke, Pembrokeshire - Wales, UK
Barafundle Bay is undoubtedly one of the most delightful beaches in the UK. The clean golden sand and unspoilt clear water in this isolated hideaway give it a paradisial feeling. Barafundle can only be accessed by the cliff path, followed by steep walk down to the beach through grassy dunes and pleasant woodland. However, there is ample car parking and café facilities and toilets 5 minutes walk away. The surrounding area is a nature reserve.

The best beach I ever came across was just outside St. Tropez in the south of France.
Soft sand round a large bay, and when the tide was out it was several hundred yards out, the beach sloped so gently.
Warm water and totally safe, hidden from the road by dunes and bushes yet only a short walk from the old harbour.

North West Scotland has some stunning beaches, as does Northumberland...but I presume you mean beaches to combine with hot sunny weather! Maybe not the best choice then!
