Because all matter reflects light according to the chemical or elemental make up. Therefore metals reflect a wavelength of visible light that appears to be the colors we have name gold or silver etc. The shiney appearance is a mater of surface finish which is why the same metal can be dull or shiney,

Ask yourself what visible light is. Its visible waves of the magnetic spectrum given off by atoms of a particular material (say hydrogen) when struck by photon's while absorbing the other waves that dont reflect back. Say I shine a flashlight at a green jelly bean. Its green because green reflects back while the other colors are absorbed. Same with the elements.

What color wold these items be underwater? Deep enough ,everything is practically black and gray.
In outerspace some things you cant see at all even if they are there because dust may be stopping the light from getting to us.
