I get so many calls I now use one of the following. You can usually tell it is a call centre calling you by the slight delay when you pick up the phone before the other person speaks. I either say when they ask to speak to me that "sorry - she is not in right now" or if I get stuck "Sorry I have to go, the baby is crying". I have three kids so it is mostly true but even if you don't have any children this works and they will say they will call back another time. Don't bother getting into the don't call again thing. It doesn't stop them - you will just get a call from another "department". Happy hanging up!

I just answer the phone, pretend to be really interested , ask loads of questions and then tell them i'll go ahead with the product, just as it gets to the part where they want personal information, i russle tissue paper near the phone (to give the effect of interference) and then hang up pretending i've just got cut off, they tend to ring back within seconds and when they do i drive them nuts by telling them they have the wriong number and accusing them of being my hubbys bit on the side.
It takes a while but what the hell it's there bill and if they want to interupt my evening I'm damn well going to have some fun with them.

Ooh I love this one, If they call at the door I open it and say 'aah I'm so sorry no-one is at home' then I close the door and peep through the keyhole at their very puzzled faces and on the phone I just put it down and let them waffle on as long as they want before they realise no-one is listening.

I don't. If I'm not waiting for a call and they ask for someone, I pretend I'm going to get them and just get back to my daily business. They really won't wait very long before giving up on you!
It goes a little like this;
Operator: Hello this is Sandra from The annoying phone calls at dinner time corporation, is Mr. Smith there please?
Me: Yes hold on a moment and I'll get him for you.
(SOUND OF ME WALKING OFF THEN SILENCE UNTIL THE OPERATOR GETS BORED AND GIVES UP!)

If they are selling kitchens/home improvements/double glazing etc, just tell them you are renting. They then realise that you have no control over new stuff, and generally go away quite quickly.
You can just say a polite, but firm, "no thank you" and put the phone down.

I tell them I have registered to not receive any sales calls (which I have) and that they are breaking the law by phoning me. They usually give a very quick apology and hang up.
:-)))

I just say to them I don't want to waste my time or their's and I'M NOT INTERESTED!
A quick reminder that I'm registered with the Telephone Preference Service usually makes them go away nice & quickly too.

Just hang up.
My Dad tells them he works for the Ministry of Defence (true!) and it is a secure line (not true!) That gets rid of them permanently and quickly but you have to sound like you mean it!

They are rated on how long their calls last and they also usually cannot hang up, so the best thing to do is ask them to hold on, put the phone down, and walk away.
This could jeopardize his or her job.
