Why did the U.S get involved with the affairs of other nations in the 20th century?

The US didn't get involved in the Holocaust.

The US got involved in World War 2, when Japan bombed a US military installation. Japan was allied to Germany at the time, and Britain had been asking for help against the Germans for some time. So, when the US was directly attacked, we got involved.

In most of the other incidents, the US got involved either at the request of our existing allies, or to protect US economic and business interests in the region, after the other counties started attacking others (Vietnam, Korea, Kuwait).

It's only recently that we've started unilaterally attacking other countries just because we don't like them.

After WWII the european economy was ruined so we gave them money to help build up their infrastructure and factories so that we could have stable trading partners. we put military bases there to protect them while they focused on fixing themselves. it happened like this in other countries too, we also built bases to protect friends from communism. After a while everyone just assumed that we would be the policemen of the world and no other country has really ever stepped up to help out on a large scale. an example would be the situation in Darfur. we cant handle it right now but everyone still looks to us, what about those europeans who have never paid us back on our loans?
