The modem came with Tiscali's set up pack for home broadband. The wireless router is a Netgear router. Do you suggest I ask Tiscali for a modem that has a USB cable?

The fact that your modem has only a USB connector means it is ready for replacement. You need a modem with an ethernet connector. Ethernet modems generally dial-up without a PC, whilst USB modems must have a PC attached.

For the moment you can connect your PC to your modem via the usb and your router to your computer via the ethernet. The wireless router will set up and work OK but you will need that computer to be turned on to access the internet on other PC's.

Sure, you can buy a USB to Ethernet pretty much anywhere. But they will not work in the manner you are speaking.

It is not simply a cable that converts the wires.

The USB to Ethernet adapter is a network to USB-A connector, the modem has a USB-B connector on it. Plus it requires software drivers to be installed for the adapter to work, you cannot install 3rd-party software onto a router.

What you should do is call up the company that you got the modem from and ask for a different model, one with an Ethernet port on it.

Hi, you didn't say if you have just bought a router and what it is etc. Am assuming you got and old usb modem which you cannot use with a modern router.

If you have just bought one from pc world at £29.99 it is not going to work. What you want is a modem router such as a netgear DG834G.

Your usb modm will probably be only capable of about 2meg download. Most companies now have moved up to 8meg so even if you are paying for 8 meg your only going to get 2meg with your old modem.

If you just bought the router take it back and tell them that they have sold you the wrong one for your set up. Good computer companies who care like Comet will ask you who your broadband is with so they give you the right router.

Hope this helps
