They preen. They place a feather in their beak and drag it through it to remove loose dirt and stuff from their feathers.
Most are sort of dirty birds.

Like others have said, Chickens will scratch, until they make themselves a little hole of soft dirt for them to dust themselves in.... They will roll around in it, fluff their wings and get it under their wings... it's kinda fun to watch them really get into it.... some of my hens would spend a lot of time dusting themselves, put their legs out to the side, like they are really tired and pant for a little bit... LOL

Chickens Scratch in the dust then roll in it to give themselves a dust bath.

Dust Baths and if there isn't a dry dirt area for them to use make a tray or area with dry sand in it so they can wallow in it

dust baths are the way domesticated birds bathe. they are not waterfowl so to get rid of mites they bathe in dust bowls and preen their feathers with their beaks.

they peck the dirt out of themselves and have dust bathes which actually keep them clean

it would clean like another bird peck at its feathers and roll in dust or sand to keep clean

they don't, they dust bath, which gets rid of all the nasty stuff that is bad for chickens, (dust not being bad for chickens, unlike us!!)
