Yes, they are fun pets to own. Despite what a lot of people say, they actually are very nice. However, if you do not care for them correctly, they are not fun and will die. I have had mine for 2 years and they are my pride and joy. They are EXTREMELY active and wouldn't pinch me anytime.
In order to keep them well you must privide them with conditions as close to those found in nature as possible. The most crucial things they must have are as following:
HUMIDITY-
place a wet towel over the top of their cage to create and trap in humidity. rewet the towel every day and change them out once a week to keep it clean. in order to tell if you have enough humidity, you can get a humidity gage from the pet store. it must be between 85% and 100% for them to be healthy and active. ( remember, they are tropical animals and this is what their environment is like in the wild )
WATER-
you must make sure that they have plenty of water at all times. however, tapwater is damaging to their internal organs and their mouth because of the chlorine in it. in order to make it safe for them to drink and bath in, you must treat it with a chemical called Hermit Safe, which removes all of the chlorine and harmful things from the water. spraying the cage lightly every day will also help keep the humidity up, and the crabs wet. remember though, all water that comes in contact with them or their environment must be treated with Hermit Safe.
FOOD-
you must change their food out every day and give it a few suirts of water to soften it and make it more edible for them. changing it provides them with new food and prevents smelly bacteria from growing.
CLEAN SAND-
by changing the sand once a month or every two weeks, you can give them a good living environment and prevent anything from smelling. any old food should be removed from the sand and you can just use regular playsand.
TOYS-
when kept right, these animals are very active and inquisitive. they love toys and must have them. natural ones are prefered over plastic and man made ones. things like coco hermi huts, drift wood, and coconut hair mat can all be found at your local petco and petsmart. they also require bigger shells that they can move into later.
BATH TIME-
once a week it is wise to give them a bath in treated water. it removes dirt and other things from their bodies and helps to keep them clean. also, it helps to keep them hydrated.
HEAT-
a simple pet heating pad can be used to keep them warm. just make sure that it is plastic safe if you are using a plastic cage. however, petco and petsmart sell heating pads specificaly made for these crabs and set for a certain tempuratur to avoid frieing them.
My four babie have been alive for 2 years now (four times the average domestic life span) because of the great care I provide them. Hopefully, they will live out their 20-40 year natural life span with me. Most people do not know these things, so I enjoy educating them.
Upon finding the right ones, you should alway pick out the most active ones because they are the most healthy. Usually, size doesn't matter because they almost always get along. They are social creatures, so getting more than one would be a good idea. Plus, you don't have to worry about them breeding becuase they cannot be domestically bread.
If you have any more questions about their care or just them in general, visit this website:

Enjoy them. I know that I have and will always.

In my opinion it is a very boring pet it does nothing just sleeps most of the time start out with a 10 gallon tank get about 3 or 4 ranging from small to large get a couple extra shells a little bigger than the ones they live in so they can change shells when needed keep it watered and give it hermit crab food and watch it do nothing

Hermit crabs are fun if you get a good one and like to hold them..You should get land hermit crabs and the small ones are better than the bigger ones when you pick one out you should get the ones that are most active and get atleast 2.

I wouldn't recommend getting a hermit crab. They are nice for a few days but when I got one, I found out they were really hard to take care of. They have to be at the right temperature(which is pretty darn hot) and they also have to have food and water. My hermit crab died within the first week.

Leopard gecko, hate to mention it however hermit crabs, are good hermits, they take a seat of their shell all day and dont do particularly something, and my opinion unpleasant, with leo's you'll nearly style a bond with them, they achieve your believe, handy to maintain. and so they seem particularly cool! Hermit crabs individually are like looking at rocks. So I might move with the leo.

No, all you can do is sit there and watch them. Put them in the sink with water and watch them. Then one day you will go in a see that your hermit crab will be out of its shell dead. Its happened to me before =(
( Oh yah, they will pinch you and make you cuss too!)
