How do I go about making a self written map should I put just left right right or should I add the freeways and etc. Say for instance I was on my way home and I got lost.

I'd suggest putting the direction where you're going and on what street. The more specific the instructions, the harder it is for you to mix them up and go the complete opposite direction.

Definitely put the street names. It would be confusing if you forgot how many lefts and rights you had taken so far. Using mapquest to make some directions for you even in just a single city would be helpful.

Usually when I sketch out a map for someone I include the major intersections or "exchanges" as landmarks to prepare them and keep them on track. Usually just the ones that are close to or have an impact on the route they are taking. But keep it as simple and clear as possible. Too much clutter makes it hard to read. and easier to make a mistake.

If you do not know your way home, your problems have just begun. As far as takeing direction, write them in a way that makes the most sense to you. I like to circle the letter"L" or "R", write a line of direction that takes me to the next turn. Then I repeat the process. Write it so you can read it at a glance, or for god sake pull over.

I always get lost when I go somewhere neww but I just retrace my turns from the notes I jot down at red lights :) I use L (left), R (right) and even businesses as landmarks :o)

i would keep it simple but make an addititonal sheet giving you specific details just in case something would happen. or you could buy an atlas, it may help out alot.
