Tricky question since car starters are designed for extremely intermittent use! they're not designed to crank an engine continuously, they'd overheat in just a minute or two. People have successfully used them for lighter duty projects, I recall a Monster Garage where one was used to power one of Jesse's machines.

Since you're dealing in electric motors, you deal in volts and amps. Voltage drop across the motor x amps drawn = watts. 746 watts = 1 horsepower.

Starting an engine is a very heavy load. A starter motor can turn much faster on a lighter load. Its bearings are made for the momentary high torque of starting an engine, not the low torque of continuous high speed running, that might be a problem. Same is true of brushes and commutator.

Other types of DC motors are available, but you can't beat the price of a starter motor if it holds up!

The average starter has between 1.9 and 2 h.p. The rpm's are dependent on several factors. The first is the maximum amperage available. Unlike the a.c. motors that have a constant power supply, the d.c. motor can operate unloaded with 40 amps up to 1,000 at 12 volt constant. The more amperage, the higher the rpm. As you put a load on the starter, the torque increases and the rpm's decrease. For a no load, max amp spin on the starter, well over 10,000 rpm's can be achieved, a moment before it flies apart.

Horse power specifies the useable power devoloped in the engine. Speed is directly propotional to horse power. The greater the horse power you have, the faster you can go. RPM stands for Revolutions Per Minute.It indicates the speed at which the engine is running. CC stands for Cubic Centimeters.It specifies the displacement of the engine,the amount of air fuel mixture required for one cycle of operation. There exists a direct relation between the three. To increase the Horse Power of an Engine we have to increase the amount of air fuel mixture fed to the engine.This can be done in the following ways 1) Increase the CC. Increasing the CC of the engine increases the amount of air fuel mixture consumed by the engine(thus increasing power) 2) Increasing the RPM Increasing the RPM increases the amount of air fuel mixture consumed by the engine within a given interval of time(thus increasing power) although the physical size of the engine remains the same So the Horsepower is dependent on both the RPM and CC
