For a movie so critically praised the ending which was suppose to tie everything together was whacked out. It made no sense

I think, aside from confusing the crap out of me and giving me some camera shots I could live without, her whole story was supposed to emphasize the "communication" barrier all the characters encounter. Babel was the old city in the bible where everyone spoke a different language and it was chaos. the Japanese girl lived among her own kind, but was still shunned and ostracized for being deaf. Just my opinion, hope it helps!

the end showed that they understood each other, which was the theme of undersanding each other and family. when she was close to suicide but her father was thier to hug her and support her.
