Go to a school and then find a job as a tech and learn as much as you can. There is no substitue as hands on experience. What you learn in a book is not the same as real life everyday break downs and repairs. Books are mainly basic knowledge. The book cant answer your question. You only learn what you read. Why does a part malfunction and how does it effeect the rest of the engines performance? Things like this a book will not teach you.
good luck......

you could learn it in books but it's not the same as having actual hands on experience, I would enroll in a mechanic's school if you want to learn with hands on experience which is the best way to learn.

if you can show that you are eager to learn, and can be easily taught, you might could find an independent mechanic that might be willing to teach you, you could work as a helper until you learn what you need to know. I did it 12 years ago, I'm still working there.
