I wish to join the SCA, and am only more intrigued by the information I have read about it, however, I am about 5 hours away from the nearest group. Is my case hopeless, and do you have any suggestions to help me? Please.

There are different sorts of "activity". Crafting is activity. Writing poetry is activity. There's also dancing and feasting and there is/are a *lot* of support activities.

The nearest folk with similar interest may not be in the nearest group. There's trial and error in finding buddies for activities. Some contacts will be face-to-face and others will usually be e-mail, depending on schedules from month to month and year to year.

If you can afford it, get the membership. That shows serious interest. It also gets you on the mailing list for "kingdom-level" activities and gives you contact names, etc. No matter where you join, you send your membership application to the same place. It is *not* paid through a local group.

You might look at a different organization (if you want). Amtgard is also a medieval re-enactment, with a little fantasy thrown in. If you go to Amtgard.com you can find out if there is a group near you. It's a lot of fun, and the combat is a LOT safer.
Otherwise, your only choice is to start your own SCA chapter. I'd go to a few special events first--they have a few overnighters every year, and the drive won't seem so bad if you are staying a day or two. That will give you a good idea of what to expect from them. Talk to the people in charge and get some advice--starting your own group will be a lot of work. They might also be able to put you in contact with some former members who moved, retired etc. You can try recruiting at your local colleges, high schools and gaming shops. If you want to do any combat, make sure your weapons and armor are really good.
Good luck!

My SCA group has a Yahoo group that we talk on all the time. It keeps the group together. If there is a special event going on in a near by Barony or Kingdom, we car pool to get there. I'd join your nearest group and check out the Yahoo groups under the SCA listings. There are a bunch of them. We also communicate with email information about all kinds of arts, crafts, costumes etc. Anyone in the SCA would be glad to help you with your interests. Hopeless... never.

The kingdom in my town has a yahoo group. How I got involved is I went to www.sca.org and they let you search for the kingdom in your area and then they give you a link to the web site of of that kingdom and on the kingdoms website they have a link to join the yahoo group. Where is it you are located at?
