People have some natural instincts to be slightly defensive when they're in unfamiliar surroundings, and for good reason. Unfamiliar crowds can be somewhat dangerous...if you're by yourself, you can get lost in them...someone might steal something from you. It's not common that things like this happen but it might explain that feeling you get.

When you're with a friend it just gives you a sense of security...there's someone there who is aware of you as a person and who is watching you, and who would realize if you were to suddenly disappear.

There are ways you can become more comfortable in these situations, however. Probably one of the best ways to do it would be almost like an exercise--to try "practicing" being more comfortable. Go somewhere by yourself...sit outside or sit in a restaurant or coffee shop somewhere and drink a cup of tea or coffee. Just watch people. Go somewhere on a city street or in a park and watch people. Go into a store and watch people. When you are doing the watching, it usually makes you a lot more comfortable than if you feel you are being watched. You also may find that when you are very aware of your surroundings, you react more positively to people paying attention to you, just as if a friend were with you.

Being with friends in a public place can ease any social anxiety you might have about being around strangers. By having the comfort of someone familiar around you will feel more insulated from your environment, and less likely to notice the glances of strangers. You also might want "everyone" to perceive you as likeable, and worth spending time with. I think it's pretty common to feel this way.

maybe you feel self conscious but the friend you are with is like a shoulder to lean on, your pillar of strength so with that friend you feel more secure and safe so therefore more confident wich equals more comfortable...

Because your peers give you confidence that you don't find and can't feed off of when you're by yourself.
