Actually coming from an educated person such as myself I hate when people are super snotty because they got a degree from some big time ivy league school, but at the same time those same smug fools are the idiots who are plagiarizing work and cheating their way through school and collecting accolades they didnt even work for because they got in good with the teacher.

I graduated with people who got *** laude, summa *** laude and magna *** laude on their degrees and other honors and their stupid a**es didnt even earn a damn thing. Real educated people don't act a fool because they think they're better than everyone, but I do speak to people intelligently which they sometimes confuse for being smug when in fact I am not stuck up in the least bit of sense. I have two degrees, but I tell people around me that having a degree opens many doors for you in life and the value of having it is an investment in yourself.

I don't know, I think one can think they're more qualified for certain jobs without being a better person.

For instance, I'd trust someone with a degree more as a teacher or a researcher, but someone with plumbing training as a plumber, and someone who's got the right qualifications to fix a car to fix my car.

Add to that experience... And someone can be better at something without being a better person.

But yeah, I do expect to get paid more than some guy who just left high school without any additional education or training at all. It's not about a superiority complex, just want some recognition for my accomplishments. Otherwise, what was the point of all that?

Education does not make people smug. Therefore, those people whom you think are smug cannot be educated. Education makes people just the opposite of being smug; as they know, through their education, that how insignificant they are in this universe. And, even they are extremely well educated, they know that there are infinitely many more things that they still do not know. Therefore, they cannot afford to be smug. I hope this is helpful.

There are insecure mean people in any group you could name. Why does it bother you? Are you a janitor at a college or something? If you are ok with your life choices, then you shouldn't let silly people upset you--just avoid them if possible. Everyone has things they are good at, and those not as good will always feel a little intimidated. Just focus on your strengths. Or if this consistently bothers you, maybe you are really trying to talk yourself into going back to school? Just remember, there is always someone smarter. If people are overly proud of a B.A., how do you think they feel when there's a PhD in the room?

It's my opinion that most people who are smug about their education cannot tell the difference between knowledge and wisdom. To me knowledge is meant to be shared so others can use it wisely, not used as a form of one-uppance. IMOH, God bless the good teachers out there!

Yes! But its not just educated people, alot of people lead their lives thinking they are better than others - which is complete & utter nonsense.

I am educated but I mix with anybody of any background & alot of people look down on me because of this.

I get stereo-typed as being a stupid blonde bimbo when infact I am far from that.

But the way I see it - I love my life the way it is & I love all the people I meet that I have a laugh with & those that dont like it can just look the other way :-)

yes, but also some auto mechanics think they are better than me because they can fix an engine. some homeless people think they are better than me because they know how to live on the street and i don't. some uneducated people think they are better than me because of their car or clothes. sometimes people will find any reason to be superior. education isn't the only one. maybe it's one you are sensitive to.
those people may belive they worked harder than you to earn something and you did not put in the effort.
well a great musician may have worked hard to learn the craft and feel superior because the attorney didn't put in the work to learn music.
we all have different skills and strengths. some people need to feel superior and will use anything they have.
if you are letting it get to you, then that is an issue you need to deal with within yourself.

Possibly some are, but I would say that some uneducated people are also smug, for various reasons.
In fact, I know of people that are uneducated and/or unemployed and are smug because they know the tax payer is supporting them while they do nothing all day. (I don't mean that is the case with all unemployed people, but I know some that feel that way)
