Did the knock start when you started the car and did it quit after a while? Did it sound like someone using a hammer in the engine or did it have a duller sound?
If it knocked then quit soon after starting, I would say it was a dry valve lifter (or lifters) as they could have leaked down during the storage. If the car has lots of miles, it could have been piston slap due to worn cylinders and pistons. If the knock did not quit, it could be cam bearings or if it was really bad and didn't quit, it could be a rod bearing. You shouldn't drive the car if it is doing this as it won't take long for something to break and possibly destroy the engine.
It would be easier to diagnose knowing the make, mode, year, how many miles and what kind of care the car has received.

Probably the oil drained completely down into the oil pan, leaving less lubrication for the entire engine. You may have had the beginnig of a rod bearing starting to go bad before you stored the car, now that you start the engine a year later, you may have scored the bearing causing the rod knocking. Try replacing the oil and filter and add some Lucas oil additive or Marvel Mystery fluid into the engine. Run the gas tank as low as possible and refueling with fresh gas soon too.
good luck........

If it's gone, don't worry. You probably just had to oil the pistons and pump up the lifters. If it's still there, you might have had no oil flow to some bearing somewhere for a while, and wasted it.
It could also just be bad gas. After a year it's probably like paint thinner.

Zabeth ... I'm not a mechanic and actually seeing and listening would be the best way to diagnose the problem. But I'm guessing you've got a compressed or malfunctioning hydraulic lifter. See my link below, particularly the paragraph that begins with "There are a number of potential problems with hydraulic lifters."
Good luck.

its probably all the oil has drained back into the pan and hadnt got time to go through all the parts.being sitting that long, the lifters probably lost their prime.
