Cannot answer for their customer service (many ISPs are criticised over CS - especially those with non-UK call centres).
On the speed front, many ISPs have their own traffic shaping equipment (to reduce the loads from those who use their connection 24x7 for file sharing, that make other users see slow speeds). If you can show repeatedly slow speeds (even during the morning, rather than evening peak hours) they might consider 'letting you go'.
If your connection is running slow, then BT Wholesale will only consider it a problem if a speed test is below about 500 kbps (on a 2 Mbps or faster connection).
Probably worth doing some speed tests and comparing notes with other people on ThinkBroadband's discussion area.
Switching ISP, I'd always suggest looking for 1-month or 3-month contracts, not 12 months, and be prepared to pay the activation fee of about 47 pounds if necessary (most that offer it 'free' have small print anyway, or keep customer for 12 months).

and i bet you are using that bloody bt home hub aren't you?? phone them and ask for a bt voyager 2091 or other similar wireless router. you may have to pay for it(i did £10) but it is a hell of a lot cheaper than paying 10 more months of bt contract for nothing.
those bt home hubs are pants.
BT as an ISP are and have always been very good to me for the last 3 and half years with very little down time with their service.
however if you do end up changing ISP then just make sure you don't go with Sky Broadband, you think BT is bad ?? then SKY will drive you round the bend big time.

All companies except for what's now Virgin Media use an same infrastructure from the change on your position a minimum of. it can be different kit interior the change if that is been unbundled by technique of the likes of Sky, talk talk or A N different - besides the indisputable fact that, those businesses are focusing on large conurbations first and except there is very intense call for, they're unlikely to do your change any time quickly. Your concepts are a 3G cellular connection gadget from a cellular service, even with the reality that verify 3G insurance on your area first to make efficient you get max speeds that are really solid on a 3G signal. yet another option is satellite tv for pc broadband, besides the indisputable fact that it really is often prohibitively intense priced interior the united kingdom. If this impacts countless human beings on your area even with the reality that, then you really may evaluate clubbing mutually and getting some form of community community going - per chance mutually with an area college, college, Council or IT business enterprise who may be prepared to help.

They can charge you for the monthly amount for the rest of your contract i.e. 30 a month if you have 10 months left is 300 quid.
A little unknown tip is if you keep phoning them with your problem (Slow Speeds) and they cant solve it after 30 days and at least 5 tries they will let you disconnect for free.

If you're not getting the service you paid for, the contract is broken and you can happily cancel the direct debit and go elsewhere.
Send them a letter by Recorded Delivery explaining what you've done and why.

I reckon they are the best thing since sliced bread.
You seem to have been unfortunate.
But they should answer your concerns.
Write to Head Office at Newgate Street - that usually works for me.
