It takes three years to train a service pet and they start from the time they are a puppy. The training is intense and any of the facilities that I have been made aware of will only work with individuals who have had extensive experience working in the canine training field. Once the dog is ready for placement with an individual they are introduced and if the trainer observes the right kind of bonding between dog and human they are placed with the person.
It seems unlikely that you will be able to be a part of your dog's training except if you do it at home. There is an organization in Ottawa, Ontario called Canines with a Cause that you might be able to get more information from. They may be able to recommend some decent books for you.
Good luck.

If you are in the USA, check with the United Way in your area. They tend to have links to numerous organizations in the area and can probably direct you to a local group that can help.

Use the link below to find the local office in your area. You'd be surprised the people they are in touch with.

Call around to your local vets and see if they know of an orginaztion near you that can help. They take care of their pets too by going to the vets so vets should know of any in your area and get you the numbers.
