King Arthur is an important figure in the mythology of Great Britain, where he appears as the ideal of kingship both in war and peace. He is the central character in the cycle of legends known as the Matter of Britain. He was said to be born in the 5th century.

His title of 'King' is disputed: in the earliest mentions and in Welsh texts, he is never given the title 'King'. An early text refers to him as a dux bellorum ('war leader'), and medieval Welsh texts often call him ameraudur ("emperor" in the pre-Medieval sense of the Latin imperator, i.e. "commander".)

The historicity of the legend has long been debated by scholars. One school of thought believes that Arthur had no historical existence, that he originally was a half-forgotten Celtic deity that devolved into a personage.

The converse view holds that Arthur was an authentically historical personage, a Romano-British leader fighting against the invading Anglo-Saxons sometime in the late 5th to early 6th century.

Probably there was an historical figure upon which King Arthur was based. Probably most or all of the stories about King Arthur are myths. There is no real answer to the question

Evidence suggests that he was a great warlord who helped keep the Saxons at bay after Rome left England to defend itself. He was a savior to the Brits, so to speak, and tales of his return got bigger and bigger with the telling. Saviors are always supposed to come back after they die.

I think he was a real person, but Hollywood has hyped him up to much and embellished his history

He was real, but I believe that his character has been somewhat inflated.
