Say:
I must have been in the shower/bath.
I was Meditating, and by the time I came to, I completely forgot to check the my messages.
I turned my phone/ringer off, because I had a headache and needed to take a nap.
My friend was on the other line or over my house, and she was crying about her mom/boyfreind/school/job. She was really upset. We talked for hours and I couldn't get off the phone, she needed me.
I went jogging took a walk.
Was watching a really great movie, episode of Grey's Anatomy, the discovery channel, and could not get my attention away from it. Did you know the earth may explose in 1 billion years.
Good luck

Just because the phone rings doesn't mean I have to answer it. I do get a lot of marketing pesties, so people with a legitimate reason to call know that they need to speak to the answering machine. If I'm home and in the mood to talk, I'll pick up.

Normally I say my one year old was screaming and I never heard it! But I also use
- having a lie down as had a headache
- turned the phone down as I had a headache or the baby was sleeping.
- the baby dropped the phone and the battery came out
- was in the toilet/bathroom/bedroom or kitchen with the music turned up
Not that I`m a fibber, just prefer to screen calls!!

Tell him you went out with your family for a meal and left your phone at home and by the time you got back it was too late to call... Alternitavely you could save yourself the bother of this happening again and tell him the truth!

I was busy and didn't feel like answering the phone. It's your phone, you don't need an excuse.

no excuse, there is a weird view that IT has to be answered, we associate the telephone with emergencies and feel a need to answer, but that's just a throw back to the early days, we simply haven't got a reasonable protocol yet, but surprisingly, texts and emails are just as 'demanding' though more people are willing to wait.
