I am by nature a friendly, assertive person who says Hello to those I meet when passing by, but I notice recently something that I am not sure of, it does not matter who the person is, male or female etc etc but there are times when I am walking toward someone and I instictvelly put my head down and don't make eye contact and keep walking. What does this body lanugage mean?

Hmm, what I'd get from that is that you feel ashamed, unsure, hesistant, perhaps threatened.

I am too a very outgoing and assertive person yet I have also gone through periods where I avoid eye contact with those around me.

I have come to two conclusions: When I start doing this is either because I have lost confidence in who I am or what I am doing with my life or because I can be very sensible to what people communicate back (verbally or non-verbally), when you smile or greet.

Either way, when I become consiouss of the fact that I am putting my head down I go ahead and activley seek to say hello and be my beautiful, genuinly unique self.

Success!

Body language is kind-of subjective, it can be different in cultures.
It could mean you are really not in the mood to talk to anyone(or them, personally). That is to say, you don't know these persons, and maybe you have had a bad day and don't want to deal with people at the moment. You could be too tired or lazy to start some small-chat with these people, or even just have gotten sick of speaking with people because it hasn't payed off...
Either way, I am pretty sure it means you don't want to talk, reguardless of reason. Oh well.

It could mean a number of things
1. Your shy of the person.
2. You do not want 2 b rude by staring at the person
3. You do not trust the person and do not want to draw attention to yourself.
4. You also could think that ur superior 2 that person and they do not deserve ur attention.
5. You do not want 2 b seen associating w/ that person

Body language can signify more then any words could.

Body language signifies what you are actually experiencing at that moment. I believe you have great insticts ,and you know that particular person will not be receptive to your openess, and or they are a threat.
Crossing one's arms when speaking to another means defensivness etc. Being purposeful in stride and forging ahead can also mean people do not want to be bothered.

Something about this particular person brings out feelings of insecurity, fear and/or shame in you. Perhaps he or she reminds you of someone else who causes you to feel these things so please take time to discover if this is true and who this individual reminds you of; also, ascertain the reason this person's presence seems to bring your spirits down. I hope you find the answer quickly because this is a very negative and unhealthy reaction to someone. Good luck.

You don't want to risk them trying to talk to you. People usually don't try if you ignore them, I'd know, I've been doing it my whole life. I don't know if you feel inferior when you talk to them, or irritated, but you could try intentionally talking to the people you want to avoid and note how you feel when you do. Maybe it just takes too much effort to carry on a conversation with them, maybe they bore you, maybe they're just exhausting people. Maybe they intimidate you. Maybe you're in no mood to talk to anybody when you do it and just need to be quiet for a few minutes.

a lot of women in particular do this. i always assumed it was some sort of defense mechanism to not engage the other person. this may be what you are doing subconciously.

It means you fear these people, and you don't feel safe around them, you would prefer they didn't exist in life.
