My 25+ year old quarter horse gelding gets diarrhea very easy and got it so bad that it dried to his legs and under his tail. When i was trying to brush it off, it was taking hair with it. Now he doesn't have any hair on his "cheeks". It isn't raw or anything so i dont need the vet to prescribe any ointment or anything. I just want to know how to get his hair growing back faster? Should i put a tail guard on it?

Like i said he gets diarrhea really easy. Where i live there was a dramatic weather change (like 20 degrees) in only a few days, thats where he got it from. It is all gone now, and i just want to know what will make his hair grow back faster and better.

If you would keep him washed off--he won't get gallded and the hair won't come off--keep him clean an the hair will grow back ! A change in weather will not cause diarrhea--probably needs a good worming!!

Why does he have diarrhea in the first place? A healthy, normal horse will not have this problem. There's something going on health-wise with this horse.
The manure burned the hair off because it was allowed to dry on the skin -- it's caustic and an irritant. Keep him clean! A tail guard will only trap the manure next to his skin and make it worse. The hair should grow back once you get the diarrhea under control.

Wash all the diarrhea off. It will grow back on it's own but Shapely's TMG will help it grow quicker. Just put some on it every day until the hair is back.
I love Shapely's TMG! It has been around forever and works great for many things. I always have a bottle in my barn.

You differently need to look at what your hose is eating. Something is not agreeing with his system. Some hoses can't eat bran in there food some alfalfa hay or to much of it will give them the runs . Check with your vet . His hair will grow back on it's own but you could use some grease where it's bare. You could wrap his tail so it doesn't get matted.
Good luck

for one thing washing him all the time is not going to help! it will make his skin worse, stripping the natural oils from his skin is a bad idea. being that he is an older horse diarrhea is going to affect him more often, but you need to look at you feeding program. heres something you can do, apply Equss hair growth, its hard to find but works like a charm. Also go to wallmart and pick up a can of Pink. I use it on both my horses and cattle, it will replenish the oils in the skin.

Why are you worried about his hair? I'd be concerned about the diarrhea. I'd have a vet check him. They aren't supposed to get bad diarrhea.
