there are many natural resources already in use for alternative to fossil fuels. One of the most popular is ethanol. This is fuel produced from either sugar or corn that is alchohol. Another type of alt is bio-diesel. This fuel is produced from the natural oils found in vegtables. (such as beans). You also have hydrogen which can be produced from water, and when burned in the motor produces water (2H2 +02(air required to burn fuel)=2H20). Another type is solar power which creates electric for the car to run off of. Just about anything that can burn very fast can be used as an alternative to fossil fuel. A lot of the alternatives in place today are better for the environment as well!

1) Vegetable oil (actually what the diesel was designed to burn) of many ilks (soy, rapeseed, corn, peanut, etc)

2) Methane- from decomposing grass or poo.

3) Hydrogen (broken down from water via electrolysis... the source of the electricity for this could be hydro, wind, tidal)

These are very straightforward replacements for fossil fuels... the veg oil is almost the same as fossil fuels in terms of transportation and storage, how to burn it, etc.

And we could grow a TON of it here in the states.
