What was the purpose or significance of celebrating birthdays? Besides maybe keeping a positive vibe.

You would be celebrating life, being alive. An important thing when you are trying to survive. If you lose the will to live, you will not live. It was all part of the psycological rigors of surving the unsurvivable. When we lose someone we celebrate their life, not their death.

I think mainly to keep a positive vibe, nothing like crashing into the side of a mountain and having to eat your friends flesh to kill off your optimism and hope.......

They had to get warm somehow. Maybe by celebrating birthdays it kept them warm and took their minds off of the cold.
