Yes we do throw things away too soon. We are caught up in the latest trends and fads and must have the latest thing that is being sold because of color etc. My belief is if it still works keep it. Some of the older appliances last much longer than the cheaper ones being sold today. Redundancy is built into all things today. Thus feeding the market sooner than necessary

You have been very lucky. I think that most people throw away things too soon. If I can get away with having things repaired I will. Also I am very lucky in the respect that my husband is very good at mending most things mechanical and electrical.
After all why buy new when the item which you bought and liked at the time is still going strong.
I hate this throw away society. Not everything new is good.
Good on you!!!

There's no need to throw things away if they're still usable. If you don't want them any more, why not put them on Freecycle so someone can take them off your hands and give them a new lease of life, preventing them from ending up in landfill. Plus, makes you feel good about helping others out too!

well i think it's a mixture of people getting tired of things (ie: car), and the fact that in the past, appliances like fridges etc.. were built to last. no longer so i'm afraid, most things are conceived to last 2-3 years....
i think you have still been lucky that nothing's ever broken down!

Yes as there is little possibility of fixing modern appliances as the cost of fixing them is more than a new unit, but if you want to upgrade and no-one wants to buy your old item go to www.freecycle and someone will want what you have as it is for free.

I replace everything whenever we move or when it is broken-personally I think we should try fixing things more, these days we just throw things out and replace them, they could be repaired but it is usually cheaper to replace-maybe we should recycle to charities that could repair and reuse?

alot of things are thrown out to soon. but things are no longer built to last like they were. We are now at an age that we want the products cheap, so they have to compromise on quality.
I've just had to replace my washing machine and decided not to pay to much and when this one conks out I will replace it.
