The term Levee is one of many used in low lying lands around the world where protection from sea/river flooding is paramount.
For example in Holland they are called 'Polder dykes'
A dike (or dyke) is an artificial earthen wall, constructed as a defense or as a boundary. It is also known in American English as a levee.

Levees are raised banks beside a river to help stop it bursting its banks when in flood. They are used in and around New Orleans in the US for example, and it was because the levees failed and broke that hurricane Katrina flooded the city to such devastating effect.
