This won't last long, your boss will probably overhear about this rumor. Don't let it get you down. You'll be a winner when the kiss-up person is confronted by this bull. Just stand back and shake your head in disgust. But keep quiet.

It is hard to work with people that are inmature and brown nose, but you could go to their lever and be vendictive by telling the rumors to the manager or just be a grown up and do your job properly and productively. As a boss, I know the ones from the others and at the time or raises, bonus and more hours, I know exactly where to go.

Arrange for one of your competitors conversations to be overheard by someone friendly to the boss thus word gets back to boss and your hands are "clean."

Otherwise just tell the boss that a conversation is needed between your boss and the coworker and let them sort things out.

Also, pucker up some more.

I wouldn't let it bother me. I've always found that in time (usually very little) the truth has a way of becoming exposed. I would tell this person to only talk to me if it's business related and if they have gossip, just keep on walking.
