Most likely you will work for the FBI. You probably need to get a degree in Criminal Justice, or Forensic Psychology. A great School is John Jay School of Criminal Justice. Afterwords the FBI requires you to have at least 5 yrs. on the same job to show your commitment maybe you could be an intern? After you apply for the FBI if you are accepted you must attend the FBI training course at their Academy. Then you will be able to do your dream job. For more information

You have to major in psychology, criminal justice or political science and then apply to your city's police academy and you go through and become an officer and then move through the ranks like everyone else does and then make your way to the department you want to work in. It usually takes about 5-7 years for an officer to make detective status depending on how fast they get promoted. The more education the better your chances of getting into the police academy since a lot of candidates will come on with graduate degrees in the areas I mentioned above.

I got a friend who does it in another state. He has a masters in Criminal Justice, but he has colleagues who just went straight into police acedemy without a degree. Cops are blue collar workers, they don't tend to go to university, but some do.

One police cheif I know of has a masters in history. He says it helped him to figure things out.

The local police force (Tampa is different from Miami and of course Florida's got lots of other police forces) will have a website that talks about recruitment. There should be someone you can talk to listed there.

It's important you keep in shape, and save up. Police don't get paid all that much, so a University degree that brings a lot of debt may not be the best idea.

I live in Florida and I know that it really HELPS, its not absolutely necessary to have a degree. I go to GCCC and they have a great ciminal justice degree program. I also have a good friend that is a homicide detective and he just did real good as a "beat cop" and took the detective test and was promoted.
Just keep trying you make it sooner or later.

First, you must attend your local police academy; do street work for awhile; then, eventually, you can get promoted to a detective position.
