I just had my pilonidal tract removed...I'm 29. It got infected when I was pregnant and was aweful. It's a sinus tract that can either get infected or become a cyst. Is she having it removed? It really is pretty benign...meaning it's not dangerous or life-threatening. Just uncomfortable and can be painful if infected(like mine). I hope this helps!

Pilonidal cysts are very common. I work in the OR and it is a common procedure that we see a lot of. I had to have the surgery done twice because it can grow what they call fingers and when they did the surgery the first time they didn't cut out all the fingers and it came back. It is nothing to worry about and not everyone has to have surgery to get rid of it. Sometimes they can just lance it and that will take care of it.
