Convergent evolution describes the situation in which two different species evolve the same sort of adaptation or structure because they have similar environmental needs. For example: fish have fins and whales have fin-like flippers.

Divergent evolution describes the situation in which populations become structurally different from each other over time because they have different environmental needs. For example: Darwin's finches on the Galapagos Islands are thought to have evolved from one species of finch. But because the islands had different foods available, finches with different beaks survived on the different islands.
