It heats up fine for a while (lovely hot water, so not an element problem) then throws a wobbler and pops out the reset button. Could this be because the thermostat is turned up too high, or is the thermostat likely to be broken altogether?

If its popping out then its doing it for a reason there is not a lot you can do. You need to get it looked at dont keep pushing it back in as it will eventually fail then you could be looking at a fire. Your probably need to get it replaced sorry

The thermostat is on or off. It can't cause the button to pop out. The reset button pops out when electricity is going somewhere it shouldn't go, which means you probably have water leaking into the heater element and you're risking electrocution. Replace that puppy.

The reset is popping due to too much heat...Turn down the thermostat and see if that helps...if not you will need to replace the thermostat because it's not shutting off until the reset gives up.
