are the things people say and do while drunk more of what they actually want to say (and mean) than when not drunk. ok example... when mel gibson said all those things about how he hated jews... he was drunk at the time he said it.. but isnt it safe to say that that was his real opinion? when sober we are able to think before we do things and when drunk we just do them. in summary, can u really get a good idea of how someone ACTUALLY feels about something while they are drunk?

I believe you are correct. Alcohol is a mild Truth Serum if there is such a thing. I have seen this happen on occasion. "Inhibitions" are the first thing to dissolve in the blur of alcohol often resulting in honesty of mind. There's an ancient Latin proverb "In vino veritas" - In wine, there is truth.

Hmm. I think that Mel is racist at his core. But I think that's true of all of us raised in this culture - black, brown, white, etc. We are raised to look at things through a lens of race, and it's hard not to have beliefs based on race, a truly race-neutral perception. That said. There are more primative beliefs, like racist beliefs. Then there are the more evolved beliefs - the ones you learn later on in life - like that racism injures people and our society as a whole, for example. I think that the higher processes are impared by drinking, so you're less likely to censor yourself. Consider these:

1. You want to break up with someone, but you don't want to hurt them. You have a few drinks to "bolster your courage". And tell them and hurt them.
2. You normally drive a few miles an hour over the speed limit. You get drunk and drive 20 miles an hour over the speed limit.
3. You hate flying. You have a few drinks to "calm your nerves" before getting on the plane.
4. You're drunk. Someone says something about your favorite athletic team. Normally, you would say something smart and move on. Instead, you haul off and try to deck the guy.

I don't think it's that you have a "more authentic self" when you're drunk. I think it's that you shut down part of yourself when you're drunk. It's the rational part of yourself. The part that makes you think about what you're doing and make choices based on that, rather than blurting out the darkest part of your thoughts, or quieting the voices that caution you about your behavior.

I think both of those impulses are part of your "true self". You are what you choose. When you're drunk, you lose part of your "true self" and, for a lot of people, the darkest, unbalanced part of your self comes out.

I think it exaggerates feelings that already exist. But I also think people can say things when they are drunk in reaction to what someone says to them, that maybe they don't mean. Like if someone hurts your feelings and you say you hate them and never liked them anyway. I don't necessarily believe that. I don't know, that's a tough question.
