I would suggest to the person to get books from the library on how to prepare and do well on exams; the approach does matter. This might be encouraging because it is an action and a change the person can take that is not based on fantasy and is supported by the experience of the authors.

A lot of people are like that actually. They do the homework and know the subject matter but freeze up during test. It is very discouraging, but there are professional tutors that could help and study groups are a good idea. May be a good idea to find out exactly why the person is not good at test. I know a student that did better just by chewing gum while taking a test it kept the student from being so nervous. Also, maybe arrangements can be made for the student to take test individually. I think it could be many things and the first thing to do is identify exactly what the issue is.

this person may have a learing disorder. i know that when someone has a hard time with anything in life everyone jumps at the disorder thing, but i was there and know how frustrating it can be. this person should see an expert, because it could be as simple as needing a little extra time to be able to properly read and understand the questions, or they may need someone to read them the questions before they can understand them. i've even seen people have to have the coloring reversed so it was a black page and white lettering before they could properly read the questions. there are a lot of resources out there and depending on what level of school this person is in, you may want to talk to the guidance counsoler.

Perhaps the person needs to learn to study differently. I know that this term I didn't do as well as I liked and it wasn't because I didn't study hard. I've signed up for a class on study techniques. I've also been doing some research on the subject. One source said to go home after a lecture and rewrite all of your notes. It will help you review. Also, to study a little everyday and not to cram. Taking notes while reading an assigned chapter helps to retain the information also.

sounds like someone is being intimidated by exams. Try this...Exams on the surface are used to show how well a given student is retaining material taught. However, it is also used to gauge how well the TEACHER is doing his her job. SO rather than look at the exam as a pass fail, look at it as a way to show the teacher that he or she is doing a good job. It is really easy if the person likes the teacher.

I would impress upon them, what I really believe, that is that they "did their very best" which is the most important thing and that makes everyone who is close to them very, very proud. It is better to try and fail than not to try at all.

Perhaps, they could get some free tutoring or have their skills evaluated professionally, they may have a learning disability that can be helped.

Some people are just born stupid. There isn't much you can do about it besides send 'em to work in a factory or something. Leave the passing exams to whom it comes easy.
